If overloaded, the fusible conductor will heat up, causing the applied tin (or tin alloy) to react with the fusible conductor. This reaction causes diffusion of the tin in the fusible conductor, giving it a locally higher resistance. This leads to accelerated diffusion until eventually the melt band melts. This process is irreversible.

Our melting belt technology is specially designed to withstand periodic overload, where the time from diffusion to melting through is very small compared to the melting characteristic. This minimizes the risk of aging due to periodic overload.

As soon as the melting strip melts, an arc is created by the driving voltage. This arc will further burn off the ends of the fusible conductor until the distance between the ends becomes too great to maintain the arc. In this way the circuit is interrupted and the fuse ensures safe operation.
